How Hadiths Shape Islamic Thought and Practice

 People have been memorizing the Quran for hundreds of years. Schools and centers were built all over the Islamic world. These schools teach the Quran and Tajweed with a special teacher who learned the Quran and Tajweed from his teacher, and so on, all the way back to the time of the prophet himself, may Allah bless him and give him peace. This process usually takes three to six years. After finishing the course and passing the test, the student receives a certificate (ijazah) covering topics like How Hadiths Shape Islamic Thought.

The certificate states the student has learned the rules and can read the Holy Quran as the Prophet Muhammad did. Professional reciters (qurra) may remember the whole Quran and transmit it down. So far, no one in the West has understood how important the oral Quran is. The Quran is probably the only book that millions of people around the world can recite by heart. That is why it can't be thought of as an old piece of furniture or a historical document.

The Quranic history is the tale of how the Quran, which is the holy book of Islam, came to be and how it was written down. One account says that when the holy ayats (verses) were given to Muhammad, he would call his followers together and tell them where to write them in this surah, etc. Then he would read the verses to his followers, and many of them would start to memorize them.

Zayd ibn Thabit, who had been Muhammad's personal scribe in his later years, was in charge of this project.

This was the first draft of the Quran. Uthman ibn Affan, the third caliph, allowed people to copy and distribute six copies of the Quran compiled by Abu Bakr. It is also said that Muhammad told the people who sent him insights to write them down right away. He hired about 40 scribes to help him with this.

The secretary copied down the revelation, and then Yoid bin Thabit said that Muhammad told the secretary to read it to him again. When they got to this point and he saw that the scribe had recorded some mistakes, he would immediately fix them. Only then would he tell the people to spread the discoveries. It is also reported that Muhammad told his followers to remember the revelations. He also said that learning verses from the Quran by memory would bring the person rewards from Allah. This was another reason for anyone who wanted to memorize the verses and get God's favor to do so.

People think that Muhammad added a third part to the preservation of the Quran: a system of inspections. The written word was carefully matched against the spoken text, and the spoken text was checked against the written text. A clear illustration of this was the Arda (repetition) procedure throughout the month of Ramadan. People believe Muhammad had special Quran teachers who visited homes, taught, and ensured correct writing and recitation of Scripture.

These records were made when the words of Allah started to come forth. Sometimes, the words of one surah would emerge before the words of the other surahs could be put together. It is believed that Muhammad only said which surah and where in the surah these ayats should be recorded after the revelation was finished. We also learned about other things that were not part of the Quran.

These were revealed, but they were only for a short time and were later canceled. So, these kinds of documents were rather incomplete, but modern comprehensive copies of the Quran are more organized. The Prophet came up with Talf al-Quran to help people go from a disorganized to a structured way of thinking. The certificate says that the student has learned the rules and that they can read the Holy Quran in the same way that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did.
